Atresia of the canaliculus lacrimalis is a rare developmental anomaly of the canaliculus. It can result from a failure of the anlage of the lacrimal passage to bud at its upper end, but it may also occur if the cellular tube of the primitive canaliculus fails to form a lumen. Developmental anomalies of the lacrimal sac may be associated.
